WHAT IS RESPONSIBILITY?

responsible adj.
1. Liable to be required to give account, as of one's actions or of the discharge of a duty or trust.
2. Involving personal accountability or ability to act without guidance or superior authority: a responsible position within the firm.
3. Able to make moral or rational decisions on one's own and therefore answerable for one's behavior.
4. Able to be trusted or depended upon; reliable.
5. Based on or characterized by good judgment or sound thinking: responsible journalism.
6. Required to render account; answerable: The cabinet is responsible to the parliament.

Therefore,
responsibility n.
1. The state, quality, or fact of being responsible.
2. Something for which one is responsible; a duty, obligation, or burden.

How does it concern student leaders?
- Being a student leaders means there is a need for you to be responsible for the actions and decisions that you make.
- Responsibility = not chickening out when trouble arises from what you did.
- You have to take the blame, even if you knowyou are going to be in trouble.

What happens when a student leader gets into trouble?
-Warnings
-Bookings
-Probations
-Dropping of rank
-Under observation
-Removal of badges

So, why should we take responsibility?
It’s a choice, you do it to show that you can be held accountable for whatever you did.
- E.g. Owning up to passing the wrong information or relaying the wrong message to your class or committee.

Given your position, influence and authority, your decisions could affect a big group of people. Therefore it is essential you accept the consequences for your actions.

Only by accepting responsibility will the people under you trust you enough for you to lead them again, and the people above you to feel confident enough to entrust a task to you.

if i am not wrong its only for us, presentation team.
i understand this is our holiday and how much everyone would like to stay away from school and enjoy. however, we have to remmber that ANDERSON LEADERS FORUM is here very very soon! and we should really ask ourselves if we are ready to face the other students of singapore, i bet ans is a no. therefore, this is really a good chance for us to really realize what we have to improve as MS SIM WILL BE WITH US. so this time, we can really know where we are. i assure you this session will not be a waste of time. so i really want everyone to be there, and also have the intention of learning and improving yourself.

okay, basically we will try out the facilitating again, esp those confirmed presenters. so i need everyone to standby and really practice beforehand.

FEEDBACKS:
1) a short presentation should be made before discussion to warm them up and gv them a rough idea
2) slides shouldnt be so wordy

isn't that great! i mean it. then we will know how much we still have to improve and also check if we are really on track.

CLARIFICATION: please note that this whole forum thingy is more of a how a leader in a school can make a difference to these areas. or somewhere along that line. so i guess we are around there.

i would like to say good job to PRESENTATION TEAM! yippee. i see that this blog is somehow working and i also see improvement of work standards. credits to all.
it was also a job well done on the day of 'mini facilitating' although at times it sounded like a zoo -.-
HOWEVER, i hope on the next meeting we have, everyone would really be a lil more serious and focus on what we gotta finish first. i believe all of us can feel that not much time is left. sleep enough and pay 110% attention. we all need each other's feedback and suggestion to help each other improve, so i also would hope to see more people giving suggestions and comments. and also, try to start making it a habit to take note of your body language. its not all about posture, but the way hands are placed, body actions (you know what i mean).

here are some of the comments i have taken down on that day:

1) good to read out whatever you want ur audience to read from the slides. (remember about how people reading the qns for the first time would not be able to comprehend that fast?
2) show enthusiasm/ confidence (all can be shown through body language and tone.)
3) eye contact with audience, let them feel that you are talking to them and not the air molecules
4) can set ground rules and best if can work out a good rationale behind everything you state (dont give others a chance to criticize or qn the purpose of it)
5) can try changing qns such that its a scenario then lead to the main topic to be discussed. can make them feel more for it and make sharing more easy. abdur's is a good example, take reference please. hah cheeko.
6) remember to agree with what they say, then you state your view if you have any.
7) if there are conflicting ideas, REMEMBER, do not side any, but give a neutral concluding statement to end it off (dont make them feel embarrassed)
8) wrap up after every topic discussed.
9) post a qn to the SCHOOL instead of to individual, sort of 'force' them to speak. if they still dont want to speak, option1: give yes or no qn ;option2: just say its okay, lets move on
10) talk with open palm ( i explain before)
11) be sure of what to say, even if not, act like you're sure. let them feel that we are ready for this.
12) avoid using "you, tom", abit intimidating. can use third person, like "maybe we'll have someone from abc sec to share?"
13) let them share more, you FACILITATE. or else it will sound like a speech
14) can attempt to rephrase and value add on their answers. let them feel pro for awhile.
15) INTRO must give and example of what you want them to say. or rather for EVERYTHING, good to demo and say what you want them to say as an answer. so that they wont feel lost.
16) topics like 'I&E' and 'NE' are things students wont be very familiar with. so more case examples can be given to let participants get a clearer pic of what it is. then will they be able to think on the spot.
17) DONT SHAKE LEG
18) make sure everyone can hear you. prevent engaging in private conversation. make sure everyone know what you are discussing about.
19)use 'WE' instead of 'I'. use 'do you think' than telling them straight what you think. let them be engaged and derive with the answer you want. rhetorical qns.
20) if example you want to state benefits, try not to do it urself. maybe post it as a qn and add on if necessary. they are not here to listen our speech. so ENGAGE.

thats all i can rmb. if there is anymore or anything you guys would like to add, just edit this post okay? remember, we are doing this so that everyone would improve to make our school and council proud. so do not keep your comments to yourself.

Sorry for the late post. Have been waiting for Mr Poh's NE stuff about Anderson and was down with camp and other stuffs. Hope it is not too late. ya, here are the powerpoint slides as a backup in case the leaders are not productive (hope they are not *fingers cross*). BACKUP.

During the discussion itself, the back up presentation would be altered so we needn't waste too much time compiling.
At the end of the discussion, there will also be a sharing of ideas for Student-initiated CIP (one based on Environmental and one on Humanitarian.
How it will proceed is...
1. An Andersonian thinks of a problem that has to do with Environmental or Humanitarian matters. (E.g. Pollution)
2. Spin a bottle in the middle to see who would contribute next. This person can choose to specify more on the given problem (E.g. Pollution ---> Water pollution in Pasir Ris Park) or think of a way to resolve it. (Pollution ---> Set up Recycling Campaign in School).
3. So on and so forth until the group comes up with something tangible.

Innovation and Enterprise

Proposal

- Introduce topic (Innovation and Enterprise) to the student leaders. (Power Point used (below))

- Student leaders to share examples of I&E in their own schools and what role had they played in I&E in their schools as student leaders.

- Student leaders to discuss how to improve I&E in schools (perhaps split them into smaller groups for easier discussion) and what part they can play in implementing I&E.

- Student leaders to collate discussion as a whole group and come up with a presentation.

What is Innovation and Enterprise?
Innovation: To innovate means to introduce something new.
Enterprise: Being enterprising means being able to display bravery and dare in the attempt of a task and being very able and ingenious in business dealings.

Why implement Innovation and Enterprise in schools?
Students would benefit with innovation and enterprise skills in their future careers.
Entrepreneurship skills will enable them to be more acquainted with business dealings

Backup Plan (if students do not come up with something resourceful)

- Students would need innovation skills and strong entrepreneurship skills for the economy.

- By putting in place the following proposals to help students grasp these skills, they would be able to face future challenges.

Innovation

1. Developing Intellectual Curiosity

- Getting students to think originally and question when they learn

- Instead of always spoon-feeding students with simple solutions each time they face small difficulties, teachers should encourage/guide students in thinking of an alternative.

- We can encourage students to be more innovative by exposing them to many different forms of arts and brands in the current industries. For example: Alessi, Singapore’s Museum of the Arts etc. In this way, students would be able to gain inspiration much better.

- Encourage students to carry a sketchbook to these places so that they can pen down their ideas or inspiration quickly without possibly forgetting them.

- Workshops: e.g. talks by innovation artists conducted in schools

- Organise an Inventor's competition where students can compete by coming up with the most original, ingenious and useful invention.

2. Providing space for students to develop passion in what they want to do

- Add some form of “Innovation-time” into curriculum, inspiring students to think outside the box more often.

- On the technology side of innovation, do allow students to experiment with software that creates 3-dimensional figures, editing pictures like adobe Photoshop, coming up with something new and unique using their own original ideas.

3. Developing Spirit of Initiative

- Encourage students to be willing to do things differently even if there is a risk of failure

Enterprise

1. Developing strength of character

- Developing a ruggedness of mind in our students, they will learn to bounce back, try again and be willing to stand as a team, to lead a team and to fight as a team.

2. Building the basics of entrepreneurship

- Courses on money-management can be a start for younger students like us. Exposing us to the basics of accounting can be applied to both real life and in future, help us in any business plans we choose to embark on.

- Workshops

- Through Integrated Project Work (IPW) implemented into the curriculum, students can learn how design or come up with a prototype and come up with a business plan to sell the prototype.

YOG AND CCA

Proposed idea:
For our part, we'll flash the second page of the ppt, the questions we are covering(refer to pictures).
Then, we'll tell them about our topic, yog and cca, some background info about both.
Next, we'll put the Agenda slide three on (refer to pictures).
After the above, we'll then get them to discuss about how these two topics can bring out the leadership skills which individuals possess. (With the agenda slide on so they can refer)

Plan A/B:
1. If everything goes well, we'll separately compile another ppt using the groups' ideas on that day.
2. If things don't go well, we'll use a done up ppt by our group members which I'll screenshot and put up here for vetting.

Do vet through and tell us our problems/what we can improve on! :D

ADDING OF INFORMATION!

Events (2 examples), namely
1. OSIM Singapore Triathlon
2. The Singapore Grand Prix

OSIM Singapore Triathlon
The OSIM Singapore Triathlon was held in the place around East Coast Park. Participants that took part in the action were asked to swim 1.5 km in the sea. The popular sports events attracted people from all the four corners of the world and offered the triathlons the best platform to show their talents.

The Singapore Grand Prix
The Singapore Grand Prix is a motor race, in the calendar of the FIA Formula One World Championship. It was held in the Marina Bay area of Singapore. The Singapore Grand Prix was the first night race held in the world.

Conclusion:
International event such as these turned out to be successful as the nation garnered the support of the people and their contagious enthusiasm spurred the fervour of the atmosphere. However, for the 2010 YOG there have been reports that Singapore lacks the atmosphere and excitement of a typical host city.

Hence, as leaders, we can help spread word of the event and explain to others, of its magnitude and importance to Singapore. Moreover, leaders should expound to others of the great honour that we are bestowed upon, by hosting the inaugural YOG.
